Air transport

Transport of hazardous goods by air is subject to extensive legal requirements. Hazardous goods, therefore, can only be shipped by air transport by personnel who have received specific training for this purpose. Proof of training in this area must be provided before the person performs any obligations.

Non-certified persons are not permitted to work in this context, as is the case for all other hazardous goods classes. If hazardous goods of other classes are nevertheless to be shipped by air, a certified company must be commissioned for the above activity.

Hazardous goods sent by mail

The Universal Postal Convention forbids transport of hazardous goods by mail, with the exception of, e.g.

  • Biological substance, category B (UN3373) and dry ice (UN1845), if used as a refrigerant of infectious substances and in compliance with packing instructions 650 and 954
  • Patient samples, provided that they are classified, packed, and marked in accordance with the regulations

IATA basic and refresher training

LBA-certified IATA basic and refresher training courses in accordance with CBTA Module A for packers and shippers (formerly IATA PK1) for the above hazardous goods are regularly offered at Neuenheimer Feld (please register for training by email to the address below).
Refresher training must take place within a period of 24 months to ensure that knowledge is up to date. However, the validity period shall be extended from the month in which the refresher training was completed to 24 months after the month in which the previous training course expired if the refresher training is completed within the last three months of the month in which the previous training course was completed. 
The training ends in an examination to demonstrate understanding of the provisions. Confirmation of successful completion of the examination is required.
